Hi Angela and welcome. The barrel is stamped 5.56NATO so it will fire both no issue. If the barrel was stamped .223 then the higher pressure 5.56 ammunition would not be recommended to fire. Cheers and stay safe!
Never a silly question when learning. This model, like any other chambered in 5.56, can safely shoot .223 & 5.56 ammunition. If this rifle was Only chambered for .223 then you wouldn't be able to shoot the higher pressured 5.56 ammunition.
It is chambered for the 5.56 nato but .223 is safe to shoot in a 5.56 gun as it is just a lower pressure 5.56 caliber round like shooting a 38 special in a 357 mag it is not safe to fire 5.56 in a rifle made for .223 only
