from what I found you have to have a license to own a semi auto rifle if you have it then this gun would be legal I suggest you get guidance from a local FFL as he will know any state and local laws that you will need to comply with

Absolutely is legal in our state But...going forward, any Semi-Auto rifle purchase NEEDS a seperate permit to be able to purchase one in NYS, Even a .22lr!! If you don't have this permit but already have a pistol permit then it's a simple ammendment to get one. In my county it's $13. If you don't have a Pistol permit then you'll need to go through Hochuls obstacle course of a Permit Process. You Don't need this permit if you've already bought Semi-Auto rifles before that law was put in place. This permit is Only to purchase Semi-Auto rifles now.

Hi James and welcome. Yes Sir it is legal in the State of New York. NYS passed S9458 which Relates to the purchase or taking possession of a semiautomatic rifle in New York State. This law was signed into law on Monday June 6th by the Governor Kathy Hochul and will take effect 90 days from her signing the law. So it will become New York State law on Sunday September 4th 2022.
This Legislation, S.9458/A.10503 requires individuals to obtain a license prior to purchasing a semiautomatic rifle. Under preexisting New York State law, individuals must be 21 years or older to acquire a gun license/pistol permit. The law is an amendment to Article 400 which is the NYS Pistol Licensing/Pistol Permit law. Therefore, this new law is requiring a person to have a NY pistol permit/concealed carry license to be able to purchase and take possession of a semi auto rifle in NYS. Cheer and stay safe!
