Hi Brendan, being a pump action, this will cycle any loads you put through it. For target practice, just about any #7.5, 8, or 9 will do. This one will work fine https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/116944/winchester+ammo+xu207+super+x+game+load+20+gauge+2.75+7+8+oz+7.5+shot+25+bx+10+cs , . For home defense, #3 or #4 buckshot is a good choice https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/65084/winchester+20+ga.+2+3+4+20+pellets+3+buffered+lead+bucksho , Stay safe & have a great day!
Hi Brendon and welcome. from a self/home defense point of view, I recommend practicing with the same load you will use for self/home defense and not just practicing with bird shot and then putting self/home defense loads in the shotgun. #4 Buckshot is recommended for excellent stopping power without over penetration. This minimizes overpenetration concerns to bystanders, family members in other rooms. https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/151718/barnes+defense+buckshot+loads+20+ga.+2.75+in.+4bk+21+pellets+5+rd. ---------------- Demonstration video here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhZf_x8Esms
