Hi Jud and welcome. Extra metal for the stamped sheet metal. Usually, stamped AKMs are 1mm, bugged trunnions tend to be 1.5mm for extra rigidity and strength where the cartridges are being fired. Hi Jud, 1.5mm receivers have thicker steel, maintaining the original exterior width of the receiver , but having a thinner interior width due to the thickness of the metal. Usually, stamped AKMs are 1mm, bulged trunnions tend to be 1.5mm for extra rigidity and strength where the cartridges are being fired. It was mainly used in the RPK but has seen more popularity for AKs due to that rigidity. Remember these were built around a full auto platform. So in harsh gunfights it may make a difference. For semi auto civilian use, it's more a novelty functionally, but correct for their full auto cousins. Stay safe & have a great day!
