Hi Jazmine, your handgun permit will not be executed until you pick up your handgun from your FFL. If the gun is on layaway, you need to pay it off now. And remember, the permit is executed the day you pick up the handgun, not the day you fill out paperwork. As you probably know, here in NJ the NICS check can take 3-5 days, so give yourself plenty of time. If your permit expires the end of the month, I would make sure the gun is at your FFL by the 25th. Also, you must not have purchased another handgun in the previous 30 days from the date you fill out form 4473. I am also a NJ resident and have been through the process many times. Stay safe & have a great day!
Hi Jazmine, no. It won't start until you do the paperwork at your local FFL Dealer once the firearm is received. Just pay it off so it has time to be shipped and received by your local FFL Dealer before expiration. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
