Hi Robert, it is universally accepted that a firearm with a 5.56 barrel can fire both 5.56 and 223 ammunition. A 223 barrelled firearm should not fire the "higher pressure" 5.56 for safety and warranty issues. Many do without issue but, it is not recommended.

Since it is chambered for (the lower pressure) .223 the official answer is no.

Use .223 in it only. The 5.56 is the same case and pressure (it is measured differently under Nato specs and the velocity is the same so pressures are basically the same) but the chamber throat is different which can cause higher pressures with some 5.56 ammo because the bullets will jam into the rifling upon chambering.
