The G2 version has an extended mag that holds 9 rounds and the word G2 on the right side of the slide. From what I understand, the Gen 1 709's had 2 pins holding the internals in, where the Gen 2 709's have 4 pins.

To add : What's new in Generation 2 is an ambidextrous magazine release in addition to the extended 9rd magazine and G2 marking on the right side of the slide.
