This is a pretty ubiquitous problem with most handguns and even things like the AR15, it's just difficult to push against the magazine spring far enough to lock in the magazine when the top round is already touching the underside of the slide/bolt. I'm confident you can get it to lock in with a hard smack on the magazine without damaging anything. Alternatively, just lock the slide back first then insert a magazine.
