.30-30 is most often used in lever action rifles which I find much more interesting and fun to shoot than the (usually) bolt action .30-06. And .30-30 should always have significantly less felt recoil than .30-06 by nature of it being a less powerful cartridge. Personally, I'd look for a lever action .30-30 from companies like Marlin, Henry, Winchester, or maybe Rossi.

I Second Trevor. The 30-30 will be softer, and the lever action has a much greater cool factor! He will love either.
