Hi Lovedel and welcome. It's a bit of both. There is a locking mechanism once it is folded and the buttstock folded/locked. The buttstock has to be extended/unfolded to unlock as shown in this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBfyoOtGZGg

Hi Lovedel, the stock snaps into the 'button', but then when you fold the handle it locks it into place. Stay safe & have a great day!
