I replaced the rear sight on a 1911 with a mounting plate and a red dot. It totally changes the way you sight a 1911. You have to hold your head higher. Mine is a long slide 10mm. Still fun to shoot, but not a carry gun with the red dot.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the dovetail mounting plates for optics. You can send your slide out and have it milled to fit the optic of your choosing.
