Hi Mercier and welcome. This will depend on the skill of the shooter as well. Game has been taken at 4 or 5 hundred yards with .308. Longer distance possible for skilled marksmen. A quality .308 calibrated scope is the Primary Arms ACSS reticle scope (will get you out to 800 yards): https://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-slx-4-16x44mm-ffp-rifle-scope-with-illuminated-acss-hud-dmr-308-reticle ------------ Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
Mercier, depends on the ammo used but agree with James 308 is capable of taking deer at 400-500 yards. As for a good scope depends on your budget but think the Leupold vx freedom is hard to beat. Here's a link to one with 4-12 magnification if interested..................... https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/131114/leupold+180600+vx-freedom+cds+matte+black+4-12x40mm+1+tube+duplex+reticle ............................. If you prefer little more magnification they also make a 6-18 version, link here..................... https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/110758/leupold+175081+vx-freedom+matte+black+6-18x40mm+30mm+tube+tri-moa+reticle ....................... Lastly if you want a cheaper option best I've found is a 4.5-14 by Burris, link here........................ https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/96596/burris+200077+droptine+4.5-14x+42mm+obj+22-7.5+ft+@+100+yds+fov+1+tube+black+m .................... Hope this helps and
