Hi David and welcome. This is correct. The birdshead grip is legal because it counts towards the OAL(over all length) if you put a regular 90 degree pistol grip on it it becomes a short barrel shotgun needing NFA registration and $200 Tax Stamp. Cheers and stay safe!.

Hi David, the problem with changing to a pistol grip is that would change the overall length to less than 26". It has to maintain at least 26", or it would be considered concealable. You can add a pistol grip as long as you also add a pistol brace, which keeps the length at over 26".
