Hi Randy, the forward assist is a holdover feature from an older time. They're functional, to be sure, but are also arguably unnecessary…though that isn't going to stop a lot of AR-15 rifle makers from installing them. Stay safe & have a great day!

Hi Randy and welcome. There are a few models including this FN that the reliability does not Necessitate a forward Assist. That said, I have many AR's with Forward Assists and I have never needed it on any of them. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!
