Cons: The OEM...

Cons: The OEM handguard is very short and somewhat hard to get a solid grip on. Further, the charging handle doesn't fold, so it has a tendency to get in the way (it's also a bit of a knuckle-buster). Another gripe I have with the gun is the OEM open sights--they're very coarse and I have a hard time using them past about 50 yards. It's not impossible to use the open sights past 50 yards, of course, but the width of the post starts to obscure most of the target zone as you go past 50 yards. It should also be mentioned that the bolt catch/release mechanisms are not to my liking. First, I'm not a huge fan of the AR-style ping-pong paddle on the side (I find them to be too easily bumped), and the slide inside of the trigger guard is just asking for trouble. I would like it if CZ would make the bolt catch/release on the Bren 2 to be more like the one of the Scorpion 3 Plus, which doesn't have the ping-pong paddle but does have a pair of sliders OUTSIDE the trigger guard. What's more, the left-handed magazine release is way too easily bumped. The right-side magazine release has some fencing to prevent it from being accidentally pressed, but the left-side mag release has no fencing whatsoever--pretty major design oversight. Lastly, the gun uses entirely too much ammo. ;) Pros: Despite the above complaints, I really do enjoy this gun. For one thing, it's is ergonomically superior to pretty much any other 7.62x39 gun I have had the pleasure of firing. Additionally, despite what I have heard from some other reviewers, I did not find the recoil to be problematic. I have heard that the recoil on the 7.62x39 models is pretty substantial, but that was not my experience at all. In my last range session, I went through 150 rounds (including some steel, some brass, some pointed soft points, and some FMJs), and at no time did I find the recoil to be bothersome. It is slightly higher than on a typical 5.56x45 gun, but the recoil was still quite tame. Now, it should be stated that I run the gun on the first of the three gas settings that the newer models have (the old models just had adverse, regular, and cut-off settings, but the new ones have "suppressor," regular, and adverse settings). The first setting is supposed to a suppressor setting as per the manual, but I haven't had it cause any failures to cycle thus far. Because of this lack of problems, and since it seems to have the added benefit of reducing felt recoil, I plan on continuing to shoot with the gas block in the minimal position. I am also impressed by the weight of the gun. With just the gun and a CZ-Scorpion-style brace, it weighs in at 6 pounds and one ounce. With the addition of a fully-loaded magazine, it weights 7 pounds and 7 ounces. Adding optics, lights, etc., will add weight from there, but the base gun is reasonably light. Lastly, the trigger on mine breaks at about 3 pounds and 5 ounces, and that is pretty respectable in my opinion as far as stock triggers are concerned. In short, the Bren 2 still has room for improvement, but it is a solid performer and pleasurable to shoot. I very much enjoy this gun, and I'm reasonably sure you would too.
