A: It has a rail, usually most laser devices are a generic 1913 Picatinny style. Sometimes you have to get an adaptor but for 90% of pistols with a brand name light/laser they will work. Streamlight products usually ships with several adaptors.

A: Michael - the frame is polymer. The slide is steel. As are so many of our pistols these days. The polymer frames have proven to be very suitable.

A: Yes, there are aftermarket 40-9mm conversion barrels on the market for the XD as well as 357 Sig barrels. Probably safer to use 9mm XD mags for the 9mm conversion, but 357 Sig should work in the .40 magazine. I've converted Glock 40/357 Sig pistols to 9mm without any problems. Storm Lake makes a good conversion barrel.
