I purchased this unique J frame variant because of the innovation and design S&W put into it. Obviously designed to compete with The Ruger LCR and Taurus PolyProtector line of snubbys. One design aspect of it that intrigues me most is the lock up mechanism which deletes the hand to rachet style lock up replaced by a unique ratchet to ratchet gear system. It also rotates clock wise. The cylinder release location was also very tactile and natural for me to adapt to. I am always surprised at people criticizing light weight snub nose revolvers for being snappy especially with +p. Of course it will be snappy LOL it's a 12.3 oz. pistol un loaded!!!!! The benefit of this revolver is the ease of (pocket) carry it's very light weight smoothed out no snagging and nice and compact. I have no complaints about the fit and finish of my sample. The presentation is as I would have imagined with the different materials; polymer, aluminum and stainless steel being blended together, no issues. It looks ready for duty and appears rugged, designed for hard use. It's not designed for a beauty pageant it's a duty gun!!! The timing lock up and tolerances are spot on as I'd expect from Smith and Wesson. The trigger is very serviceable and the pull is very typical j frame even with the different locking mechanism. I was not affected by the stock grip as many people complain about. It's perfect for pocket carry. The benefit of an internal hammer system is being able to hike way up on the grip without hammer spur interference. This provides more control of the snub especially if it's snappy (because it's ultra light) and also improves the bore axis dramatically. I did purchase the Hogue Piranha G10 grip based on the bad reviews of the factory grip. Again I am just fine with the factory grip (I really don't think many people know how to shoot a concealed hammer revolver properly anymore). The Piranha grip by hogue is definitely beautiful. Fitment is perfect and provides a little bit more width for the heal of your palm. Added stipling for control. Hogue makes grips for Smith so they usually don't miss on Smith products. When I changed the grips out I hit the internals with a little ballistol and blew compressed air to force any excess oil out. This helped the trigger smoothness a good bit since the internal mechanism seemed a little dry from being in storage. No internal trigger lock is an obvious advantage. The sites are fine. The front site will get a couple coats of testers white acrylic which will put it on the radar. It would have been nice for Smith to offer a high viz option or a standard Dot since it's a pinned site, not a deal breaker. This is a fantastic snub for it's purpose of use. It's priced generously less than the Ruger counterpart in the LCR (great gun). It's super innovative and the new lock up system, according to S&W, should alleviate traditional timing issues that are inherit in traditional revolvers. This platform has been around for a while now they've ironed out any issues with it. In my opinion it's a very high value, for purpose of use, snubby. Don't sleep on it. If you want something pretty get a traditional j frame. This snub is a working man's gun and it won't let you down!!!

The ONLY reason I...
The ONLY reason I purchased this S&W model is because it is one of only a couple that does not have the internal lock. The gun is accurate but snappy due to the awkward grips. There are few options for replacement grips. However, Hogue to the rescue and I replaced it. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS because grip replacement is slightly different than traditional S&W J-Frames. Recoil is noticeable with P rounds. The Hogue replacement tames even the P rounds. As a lifelong revolver aficionado, it took a minute to get comfortable with the cylinder release being on the spine and not under the thumb. Trigger action is nothing to brag about but adequate. An excellent card table or hiding in the bedroom closet gun. Buds is normally lightning fast but my last few orders have been painfully slow. They spoiled me. However, they get a pass due to the massive rush of Americans who fear what's coming and are on a binge buy. BUY THIS GUN! I keep it in a waterproof zip lock mounted under the toilet tank lid - one of two bad spots to be caught with your pants down. Cheerio!
