What can I say, this...
What can I say, this is a lot of rifle for the money. From opening the shipping carton at my FFL 's to sighting in and getting MOA groups this firearm says quality. Great wood to metal fit, excellent bluing and fine stock configuration your dollar couldn't buy you more . The CZ99 is a good...
The CZ99 is a good rifle, but there may be better alternatives out there. I'll start with the fit and finish of the rifle. First of all, the bluing may be the best I've seen on any firearm. When I unboxed the rifle, there were white stains all over it and it looked awful. This was either solvent residue or protectant, and the stuff wiped right off with a paper towel to reveal a flawless glossy black finish. The stock was another story. Although the stock is made of actual walnut (not wood stained to look like walnut), mine was roughly sanded and unfinished, apart from a little oil. The grain in my particular stock was very open, to the point that if I ran my hand down the stock, I would get numerous splinters from the open grain. I disassembled the rifle, used acetone to strip the existing oil from the stock, sanded it down, and refinished it. The stock looks quite a bit better now, and more importantly, the grain is filled and smooth to the touch. The checkering is not hand cut, but not stamped--it seems to have been machined with a little mill. There are no points on the checkering, but it provides a decent grip. I should mention that my friend got a CZ99 as well, and his stock had no open grain and was finished much better. The quality seems to be hit and miss here. The bolt is machined a little roughly. There were tool marks on the unblued part of my bolt, some of which I was able to remove with my bench buffer. The bolt features dual extractors, but they are not exceptionally good. I had a failure to extract while breaking in the rifle, and had to tap the spent case out with a cleaning rod. My friend had similar experiences, which seems to happen when the rifle is a bit dirty but not yet broken in. After a couple of boxes of ammo with intermittent cleanings, the problem seems to have gone away. So too are the magazines a bit rough. The rifle comes with two 5 round magazines, and they are very difficult to load the first few times. Mine would take 5 rounds with difficulty, my friend's would only take 4 until they were more broken in. This seems to be a problem of small metal burrs on the magazine followers. Cleaning and lubrication did not help, but repeated loading has loosened them up somewhat. Loading a magazine into the rifle itself was also tricky. The magazine well (if you can call it that) is just an oversized hole through the wood stock, and you then have to fumble around to get the angle and position right once the magazine reaches the receiver. This is probably not a big deal, but it does give a cheap feel to the rifle. The magazine release is also dodgy: a wobbly metal button located just behind the magazine. It must be depressed with considerable pressure, and even then, you have to be careful to keep the button going straight in; it has a tendency to go in at an angle and bind up. Operating the rifle went smoothly enough. Again, there were some hitches during the first few rounds. While the bolt moves smoothly, it often does not load properly unless the motions are made quickly with jerking motions. As I burned up more ammunition, this problem lessened considerably, but the rifle still works best if the bolt is slapped around. The trigger is very smooth, and stacks nicely with a clean break. While refinishing the stock, I noticed that the trigger has adjustable take-up. It may have an adjustable pull weight also, I did not take note of that. I found mine to work well right out of the box, and did not feel that it needed tuning. The sights appear to be high-end from a distance. Under closer inspection, they are adequate, but nothing special. I do like the hooded front sight, and the rear sight conveniently flips down to allow more room for a scope. The rear sight is elevation adjustable, although the adjustment is a bit crude: you loosen two small Phillips screws and then the sight slides freely up and down. Still, someone with a steady hand will have no problem. I found no method to adjust windage on the front or rear sights. The rear sight is dovetailed into place, but I could not drift it at all using a punch. Out of the box, the sights were nowhere near zeroed; at least 12 inches off in both windage and elevation at 25 yards. Elevation was easy enough to correct, but the sights will be useless if I cannot adjust the windage. I did scope the rifle, using some see-through scope rings and a cheap Simmons 3-9x42 scope. Fortunately, the scope worked well, and once zeroed, the rifle was very accurate.a I was shooting groups under an inch at 50 yards, probably closer to .75". I tried many different types of ammunition, and accuracy was roughly equivalent across all of them. For an inexpensive rifle, the CZ99 does pretty well. I appreciate the walnut stock (roughly finished though it was), and the accuracy is definitely better than expected. Still, in it's price range, there are a lot of other .22s that would serve just as well, and maybe better if you can put up with a synthetic stock. I am happy with my purchase though, and for somebody looking for a rifle with a classic look, they could not do better for the price.

Budget minded, nicely...
Budget minded, nicely blued, good looking stock, seemed like a good idea. From there , however it starts to fall apart. The internals are cheep and poorly made. The mags are the same and cause problems. If you're looking for a reliable starter type rifle this is not for you. there are too many budget rifles out there to mess with something like this. Opt for Marlin or Savage or Mossberg, They are proven products. If you like nice wood and good metal finish, as I do, go for a cz452 or 455 by the Czech builder.
