When local firearm...
When local firearm restrictions were changed to allow the use of certain straight walled cartridges to hunt whitetail deer, I was happy. When Ruger announced it planned to build the classic No. 1 rifle chambered in .450 Bushmaster, I was ecstatic. Being somewhat of a traditionalist, I immediately removed the muzzle brake and replaced it with the included thread cap before giving it a good cleaning and heading to the range. After getting the Leupold Vari-X2 mounted and on paper, the rifle placed three Hornady 250 grain FTX into a ragged hole at 75 yards. Stretching it out to 150 yards produced a very respectable 1.25" group. Recoil remained manageable (though stout) despite the removal of the behemoth muzzle brake, feeling comparable to a slug fired from a 20 gauge shotgun. A couple things to note. The barrel was absolutely filthy upon arrival. Take the time to give the bore a good scrubbing before you head to the range. I wish the finish on the thread cap was better matched to the stainless barrel. Probably being petty here, but, I notice little things and lastly the wood to metal fit on this particular rifle is somewhat lacking, specifically there is a 1/16" gap at the rear of the forearm/front of the receiver. I own several No. 1 rifles and know this is not standard to this model. However, this is not to be a safe queen/collector gun. It will be a hunting firearm and it is accurate beyond my expectations and will serve me well for years to come.
