Call me a curmudgeon...
Call me a curmudgeon or a gun crank but I thought I'd get more than plastic and thin sheet metal for the price of this rifle. This is a Christmas rifle for our diminutive 4' 10� daughter in-law. I'm really second guessing myself for not getting a Howa barrel action, fitting it to a stock and fitting that to my daughter in-law. I hope over time I warm up to this purchase however right now my current mood is thuzz. Savage this rifle was a good idea but you took to many shortcuts for a $700 rifle. Overall rating DON'T BUY. Trigger assembly and mag well is plastic and there's no upgrade for it. [ 1 star ] The mag is thin sheet metal with a plastic catch; pay attention when seating it. As a safety feature open the bolt and it seats better. Still, I would not trust this hunting; the mag has dropped out twice so far if I don't get the plastic catch to engage its slot. I will need to keep some gaffers tape handy before sending this rifle out in the field. This is not good for the wood finish but losing a mag and missing a shot is worse. The mag body metal is so thin that if you have normal hand strength and pinched it; you could deform it. [ 0 star ] Action, jeweled bolt, accu-trigger and 20� barrel are from Savages 11 International Youth model. I won't be able to report on the accuracy until next year; I hope it will hold 1 MOA with good ammo. [ 5 Stars ] The stock is nice, its really walnut with an oil finish. It is a reduced sized stock made for women; my 5' 5� wife thought it shouldered well, liked the LOP and distance to the trigger. The recoil pad was nicely fitted and 1� thick. The fore-end was routed out to reduce weight and the barrel free floated. I don't like calling it pillar bedding but there are thin metal sleeves for the action to engage. However, with a plastic trigger assembly you're not going to torque the action down. [ 4 Stars for the stock and 2 stars for the pillars ] Wood to plastic and metal fit has a gap, the lines are straight but there is space for all sorts of dirt and crud to accumulate. [ 3 Stars ]
