Good service from Bud's and a good shooter. 1 moa @ 100yds. Muzzle brake reduced recoil immensely but warn other shooters on the adjacent bench!!

My Savage 116 Bear...
My Savage 116 Bear Hunter in 338 Win Mag arrived promptly and in expected good condition. After running a couple of patches with Hoppe's No. 9 through the bore and then a dry patch, and mounting a 70's vintage Redfield Widefield fixed 4x scope (It won out over a Leupold 4x12 for now) I headed for my range with 20 rounds of handloads. The rounds consisted of new Winchester cases and Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primers, and a start load of 64 grains of IMR 4350 pushing a 215 grain Sierra #2610. After removing the bolt and bore sighting I fired a few rounds at 30 yds. to get close and then moved to 200 yds. which yielded a four shot 4" group from a bench with a bi-pod. Adequate, I guess, but not impressive since my new Savage Scout Rifle in .308 with a 2 1/2x Leupold Scout Scope shooting Winchester White Box yielded 3 out of a four shot group within 3/4" at 200 yds. I know, I couldn't believe it either. With fire-formed cases, bullet seating adjusted for optimum accuracy/hunting situations, and a more favorable powder charge, I fully expect the Bear Hunter to meet or exceed what one might require for a mountain elk rifle. Probably because of the adjustable muzzle brake, the recoil seemed a little less brutal than my Winchester 70 in 300 Win Mag but with more powder and maybe a 250 grain Sierra #2600 I know it will get worse, but will most likely be manageable. I'm pleased with Bud's and, so far, pleased with my 116 Bear Hunter and would recommend either.

Great shooting rifle....
Great shooting rifle. Shoots 1/4" groups all day and I bet it would do better with a better marksman behind it. Barrel cools quickly, and don't fear the rap about the recoil. I shot a box in one sitting and felt nothing, took five shots with the muzzle break off. Noticed 1/2" groups with muzzle break off, but felt no difference in the kick, or should I say more of a push. Trigger was great from the box, nice and crisp, probably about 3-4 lbs. Only con I have is the price of the ammo. It shipped quick from Bud's, and who can beat free shipping and no taxes? Cabella's wanted $930 for this rifle through special order, and then you pay taxes!!
