I was curious about the New Savage Axis 2 pro Compact, I do own a Savage Axis II in .223 which I purchased some years back .. This particular rifle is a tac-driver at the range with 1/2in. groups all day .. I did very well on predator hunts with it as well ...I'm an older guy and after hunting out west for many years with elk, mule deer, white-tail, bear and caribou in Canada under my belt decided that carrying a 24in. mag. rifle was no longer in my agenda ... I was looking for a more compact lighter rifle to fit the bill .. This Savage 2 Pro came out last year 2024, It caught my attention as a considerable contender for my search .. A reasonable price, light weight, pistol grip stock and from a reputable gun maker convinced me to purchase it ... This caliber has been around for some years and with the new ammo's produced can match just about all the new ones in its own class ... Since the 2-Pro comes with a ready threaded tip barrel I added a muzzle break .. These new synthetic stocks feel great, loved the camo pattern, bronze coated barrel and pistol grip stock ..The Savage accu-adjustable trigger down to 2 1/2 pounds was my application.. Last but not least, the new bolt pattern makes it easy to use ... My first trip to the range was just a "try out" I call it ... After applying a 3x12 Vortex scope, took one type of ammo and ran it through the motions .. The trigger was good but not exceptional as higher priced rifles, it was comfortable to shoot and you can acquire your shooting alignment quickly .. The bolt was fine but after some use will be better, like all guns once you break them in the quality comes out ... Last but not least, how does it shoot .. As previously mentioned I was not shooting for groups or hunting applications.. After a good lazer bore sighting, I was on paper and took it from there as explained .. I was shooting 2in. and 1/12in. groups with 139gr ammo at 100ydrs... My experience and years of shooting have revealed to me that each gun likes its own ammo ... I will return with 3 or4 different ammo's and grain applications to achieve the result.. My expectations are 1in. or better groups or it doesn't go out to hunt ... My over-all opinion at this time for my Savage 2 Pro is "GREAT", if I achieve a 1in. group or better it will change to "EXCEPTIONAL" .. For a conventional hunting rifle and quality you cant go wrong, but then its a Savage ...
