We bought this Pointer...
We bought this Pointer shotgun for my son's high school Trap/CT team on his coach's recommendation. I was unfamiliar with 'Pointer' but trusted HOWA rifles, so I purchased it sight unseen. Buds was great as usual - getting it to our hometown FFL ahead of schedule The gun itself is beautiful - the OD green and walnut finish looks stunning, and the fit and finish impressed me for a ~$500 over-under. My son was thrilled—This was HIS first brand new gun, not a hand-me-down 10/22 or grandpa's .243 borrowed for deer hunting. The Pointer shot really well initially. The first few practices and matches went smoothly, the action loosened up and he really started finding his groove with it. During the third match, around 250 rounds in total on the shotgun, the trigger mechanism failed mid-match. The coach fixed the trigger onsite (I was not there), but the walnut stock chipped out near the receiver from the repair. My son was heartbroken (think first dent/scratch on your brand new truck) but carried on. After another match and a half, the trigger failed again, forcing him to borrow another gun to complete the tourny. At this point we decided it was time for it to go to Pointer for warranty repair. In addition to the trigger, I had requested the stock fixed/replaced as well (I offered to pay since coach probably did it trying to get the gun running again) Overall communication on their end was poor— I just got an RMA back with canned answers on what and how to ship. From there no updates, no eta, no acknowledgement one way or the other on the cosmetic issue.. The gun returned 3–4 weeks later via FedEx out of the blue. The trigger seems to be fixed but for how long? If they could have told us "yeah they missed some Loctite in MFG", or "there was a design issue we resolved with the updated part" or even "the bone head put it together wrong" we could have a bit more faith - but who is to say it isn't going to 'shake loose' in another 200 rounds or so mid match, or in the blind. Oh yes, the stock is still chipped too. My son has no confidence in this shotgun for next season. It's a shame for his first gun. We'll likely end up trading it for a Beretta or Browning to avoid more issues. Buy once, cry once.
