Product Overview
The Tristar Arms Viper G2 Youth Two Stock and Barrel Extension is a 20 Gauge semi-automatic shotgun designed to provide a comfortable fit for smaller-stature shooters while supporting long-term versatility. Its gas-operated action handles 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells from a durable 3 inch chrome-lined chamber. The 24 inch cold hammer-forged barrel features chrome lining, a vent rib, a matted sight plane, and a fiber-optic front sight. The barrel accepts the included Beretta-style improved cylinder, modified, and full choke tubes. A youth stock is installed at the factory, while the included adult stock and 2 inch barrel extension allow the shotgun to be adapted as the shooter grows. The synthetic furniture includes Soft Touch textured gripping, and the five-round magazine provides a 5+1 capacity with the shot plug installed.

I see some reviews...
I see some reviews saying it handles light loads with no problem. I see some say that it needs some break in, and then will handle light loads. Well I'm about 8 boxes in and I've rarely had it cycle anything other than 3" duck loads. For a youth model, you probably don't want a small, learning shooter to have to shoot the highest recoil shells for their gun to work. The charging handle is a little small, which was fine for me, but hard for smaller shooters to manipulate easily. The bolt release is tight and also hard for my wife/daughter to work easily. There is a company that sells aftermarket parts to replace these, but I feel like that makes the gun too expensive after purchasing the parts to make it usable. The butt pad on the short stock is also rock hard, but the one on the longer one that I use is much softer. Make that make sense. Overall I think it may depend on the individual gun you get as to whether it will function well or not. At the $750 price point, I don't think mine was worth the money. I think just a few years ago they were much cheaper, maybe making them worth the try back then.

We have had 2 of these...
We have had 2 of these in our youth program for about 6 years now. They have been reliable guns for shooting singles, but do not cycle well. We did the "Magnum" break-in and by now both have had 5000 Rounds of target loads (Winchester 7/8oz-1200 FPS) sent through them. They still don't cycle consistently and will not cycle lighter Target loads at all. We get most of our ammunition through grants, so we have to shoot what we can get. Frequent cleaning doesn't help, infrequent cleaning doesn't help. About the only shells that we can get to cycle consistently are the magnum loads...can't shoot those all day with 9 year olds...or 59 year olds, for that matter. We have a club member whose parents got her one more recently and she has the same issues. Now, we also have a youth 12 gauge Tristar that is pretty much identical and we have no problems with it cycling 12 gauge target loads. (1oz 1200 FPS) I am giving them a 3 because, they keep on working as far as shooting singles all day and they have the recoil benefits of a semi-auto for our kids. I will say in Tristar's defense, I also have a Benelli Montefeltro that doesn't cycle the target loads consistently, but can shoot AAs (7/8oz-1200 FPS) all day with out any issues. So part of it is the ammunition, but the Tristars won't cycle the AAs consistently either...and if they did... AAs are a whole lot more expensive and harder to get as far as grants go. I would love to get even lighter 20 ga loads to shoot in our programs, but with these, we can't go any lower for sure.
