Chad, the 23" medium-contour fluted barrel features Savage's patented on / off muzzle brake. You can turn the brake on and off by rotating it. That means you can open the ports on the rifle while shooting on the range, then turn off the brake by closing the ports while hunting. I believe the muzzle brake to be permanently attached but, would confirm this with Savage Customer Service at (413) 568-7001 or (800) 370-0708 ---- Monday through Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM EST
Chad, This model has a fixed muzzle brake. Unless you have the skill, confidence and tools, I would enlist a competent gunsmith to replace this fixed muzzle device. The TP is 5/8 x 24 If you want to remove and replace device yourself.
