Yes, 308 is actually loaded to higher pressure than 7.62x51 Nato ammunition and is shoot-able in a 308 spec rifle no problem.
Any American made and most foreign 7.62 will fit and fire in 308 rifles. The main concern is that all American made 7.62 is made to head space in a 308. It can be made a bit longer than the 308 and still be in NATO specs so some foreign ammo may not easily chamber. The pressures are the same just measured on a different scale and at different points on the barrel. (They both shoot the same weight bullets at the same speed right?)
It will be just fine with 7.62 NATO ammo
Eric, Yes, but to be clear there are many types of 7.62 cartridges. You appear to be talking about 7.62 NATO or 7.62 x 51mm. Yes that can be safely fire 7.62 NATO or 7.62 x 51mm in a 308 win rifle. NOTE: the reverse may NOT be true due to the higher pressure of the 308 win cartridge.
