My first pistol was an...
My first pistol was an Italian Beretta 92S police surplus model. From those original 92s all the way to the M9, they've always been excellent shooters in my experience. They've been extremely reliable, with no malfunctions to speak of. My only complaint has always been the ergonomics. I have medium-sized hands, and the grip on the traditional 92 series has always been a little too wide for me to comfortably reach the controls without breaking my firing grip. Because of that, I usually stayed away from them—not because of their performance, but because they just didn't fit my hands well. When I saw the Beretta 92XI Squalo, I knew I had to give it a try. It comes with two 18-round magazines, a Toni System magazine extension, a magwell, and aggressive G10 grips that provide plenty of traction without being uncomfortable. Even with sweaty hands, the grip feels secure. The improved ergonomics are immediately noticeable. The revised grip angle and extended magazine release make a huge difference. I was initially concerned that the oversized mag release would dig into my hand during extended range sessions, but because it's nicely contoured, it's actually very comfortable. The single-action trigger is excellent, the slide cycles incredibly smoothly, and the pistol is accurate right out of the box. At around $1,000, I honestly don't think there's another pistol that offers this level of performance and features for the money. I was considering a CZ Shadow or a SIG P226 X-Five, but after shooting the Squalo, I believe it's one of the best values currently available. As always, thanks to Bud's Gun Shop for the outstanding service. They're my go-to source whenever I'm buying a firearm.
