Product Overview
The Springfield Armory XD-S 4.0 Essential is a slim, single-stack 9mm pistol designed to balance concealed-carry convenience with practical shootability. Its 4-inch barrel and extended grip provide improved handling compared with shorter subcompact models, while the flush-fit magazine maintains a compact profile for carry. The polymer frame, striker-fired action, grip safety, trigger safety, and manual thumb safety provide a familiar combination of lightweight construction and layered safety features. A supplied X-Tension magazine adds capacity and support for range use.

Have owned this gun...
Have owned this gun for 8 years now and have shot approx. 800 rounds through it and have never had a single issue, jam, failure. This is still my EDC and I clean it every once in a while, nothing special. This is a great handgun all around, well made, and accurate enough for its compact design. This was my first Springfield pistol and I enjoyed the brand so much I have purchased more Springfields since this purchase.

I thought I would like...
I thought I would like this gun more than I did. The short grip/long slide is often touted as perfect for concealed carry. In practice it makes holsters somewhat harder to find and the balance seem off. I would imagine the overall features of this gun are improved by the Mod2 version (which isn't offered with the long slide) but it still has the unnecessary magazine safety. I think there are better choices in this super competitive market segment.
