What makes this M69 a...
What makes this M69 a special DA revolver is that Smith & Wesson finally figured out how to achieve a rock solid bank-vault cylinder lockup in a double action revolver. When the hammer is fully cocked—whether single-action thumb-cocked or by a long DA trigger pull—the cylinder is firmly locked into place. That is: ZERO play, zero wobble. As solid a lock-up as on my Freedom Arms M97 and M83's. This is highly confidence inspiring. I was curious to see how an L-Frame chambered in 44 Magnum would feel. Reducing the cylinder capacity to 5 rounds is definitely the way to go to maintain chamber strength in the smaller sized cylinder. Still, I would not shoot 44 Mag ammo in this M69 because doing so in this smaller and lighter L-Frame would be a punishing experience. I consider the 5 inch S&W N-Frame M629-5 to be the ideal frame and barrel length for 44 Mag shooting. In my opinion, this M69 is perfect for shooting hot-loaded 44 Special ammo. For example: Buffalo Bore's Heavy 200 gr TAC-XP can be expected to get around 920 fps in this 4.25" barrel and reliably expand to about 0.78" followed by an ideal penetration of 16 to 18" in ballistic gelatin. The FBI concluded and explicitly stated that penetration was the single most critically important factor for wounding effectiveness. TAC-XP ammo has a high degree of reliable expansion. But sInce even the best designed hollow points sometimes do NOT expand, you can have a greater degree of reliable penetration by shooting Underwood's 255 grain 44 Special Keith-type Semi Wadcutter polymer-coated ammo in the M69. With this combo you can expect the non-expanding genuine Keith-type SWC bullet to get around 1,050 fps in the M69 with a penetration depth of 30" or so. VERY effective for incapacitating would-be prevailers. Despite the unsightly Hillary Hole, and the disappointing continued use of MIM triggers and hammers, I like this gun.
