Prior to seeing the...
Prior to seeing the Steyr Scout (used) in a local gun shop, I had never heard of Steyr, scout rifles, or Jeff Cooper. I just saw and handled what to me was a unique, very practical, and intriguing design that satisfied all my "wants" in a gun. Those included: light weight, handling balance, a more compact length, great trigger, smooth/easy bolt, and a superior barrel that would maintain accuracy in all shooting conditions, among other things. Within days of my first encounter, I was on-line with Buds, purchasing the green Scout in a 308, and shortly thereafter added the Burris 2x7 Scout scope with Leupold QRW short rings. Using Remington 150g PSP Core-Lokt, and in no time at all, I had it zero'd in at 100yds, final 3 being within an inch. Next day I took it out in the field and dropped in tracks a nice So TX buck and feral hog. Let me close by saying - Wow! This Steyr Scout is a complete delight to shoot and own. The recoil is minimal and was of no concern during the sighting in process. I love the long eye relief setup and really felt that it enhanced the hunting/shooting experience (deer and hog were shot at 100 and 150 yards). The extra magazine in the stock is ingenious (why aren't all composite stocks made that way?). The integrated bipod is fantastic, solid, and easy to engage/disengage, and was utilized effectively in sighting in, not to mention the balance and ease of carrying the rifle in the field. I've shot the same Remington BDL since 1981 (which has been a dear friend), however, she will now be retired. I could go on, but I hope you get the point. The Steyr Scout is truly a remarkable rifle, worth every penny, and wholly lives up to its hype and reputation. Treat yourself this classic!

When the Steyr Scout...
When the Steyr Scout came out during my salad days in the late '90s, its MSRP was $2,800; that's $4,200 in today's dollars, if you're keeping score (no wonder I never owned one until now). About two years ago when Steyr halved the MSRP (surely in reaction to Ruger's success with its Gunsite Scout), I told myself I'd have one. When Steyr announced their $100 mail-in rebate, I knew the time was right and purchased a .308 with an OD stock. Purchase/pick-up was done with Bud's usual efficiency. As a bonus, my Steyr Scout arrived with a threaded barrel, even though there was no mention of the barrel being threaded in the description. Before purchasing yourself, you may want to call Steyr USA in Alabama and inquire as to whether or not all their new standard barrel scouts (their website only talks of heavier barrelled "Tactical" models as being threaded) are now threaded. Anyway, you may buy an adapter directly from Steyr's website if you want to run a standard US threaded silencer. I've set mine up with a Leupold FXII Scout Scope in 2.5x; a 1" brown Ching Sling from Andy's Leather; and an extra 5 round mag from Steyr USA; pretty much how Col. Cooper sat up his "Linus Blanket." As well, Richard Mann's "The Scout Rifle Study" available as an ongoing on-line publishing is (along with Cooper's "Art of the Rifle: Special Color Edition") required reading to understand and get the most from your Steyr Scout. I've zeroed (150gr. Remington Core Lokt) the duplex scope so that the bottom of the top post is 3" high at 100yds; making the crosshairs on at 300yds; and the top of the bottom post is minute-of-man at 400yds. Bottom Line: At about $1,300, the Steyr Scout is a pleasure to carry and shoot. If you've ever appreciated the writings of Col. Cooper (and today's Richard Mann), you owe it to yourself to pick-up one of these "do-it-all" rifles. You will not be disappointed.
