The Remington 870 is a pump-action shotgun that was first introduced in 1951. The Remington model 32 was struggling against the sales of the ever popular Winchester model 12. The effort of Remington was to introduce an affordable shotgun that would be rugged, reliable, and yet streamlined……..enter the model 870. By 1973, sales on the 870 reached 2 million (compared to 200,000 of the model 31). Realizing it was a winner, and adding the “Express” line in 1996, sales soared to 7 million, and by April 2009 they reached over 10 million. The model 870 is by far the most popular pump action shotgun in the world today. This firearm is widely used by different law enforcement around the world. It is also being utilized for shooting sports, hunting, and is considered to be the best and most reliable shotguns ever made. The main mechanism of superb Remington 870 is built from a solid billet of steel to maximize durability, and twin action bar prevents damage during cycling. The sporting model comes with high quality laminated hardwood stock and forearm. The metal on the receiver and barrel is a matte blue/black bead-blasted finish. The 870 has been made in a multitude of variations which include: Wingmaster, Express, Marine, SPS, SPS-T, XCS, TAC, Super Mag, and the MCS. Depending on the model, weight can range anywhere from within the 7-8 pound range. Barrel lengths range from 18-30 inches, thus changing the overall length of an 870 from 37.25 in. all the way up to 50.5 inches. Tube fed magazines are 4+1 in the sport models, all the way up to 7+1 in the tactical models. Without a doubt, the Remington 870 remains the king of the pump action shotguns today. It is the the most popular choice among hunters, shooter’s sports, and civilian who simply want to keep it for protection purposes.
