The only negative is that the revolver arrived with rubber grips and not wood as shown in the picture. There are some minor areas of missed bluing (on the trigger guard and the shell ejector), but all in all a good value for the money. Seems to be well made, and looking forward to a long service life.

Its not a bad revolver nor is it a great one. The finish is a little on the hit and miss side. Some of the bluing is a little thin in some of the areas, frame and cylinder. The sights are crude. The front sight isn't flat on top, one edge is higher than the other. I like the wood grips but what did they stain it with? What ever they used it stinks, as in really smells bad. After handling the revolver the smell transfers to your hand. Im not making this up, my brother-in-law commented on the smell as well. Its not a bad shooter and has a nice single action trigger and decent double, mine is not gritty as others have stated. I really do like the classic look and its too bad that Charter doesnt have one in .45acp for those that dont reload since .44spc can be hard to find at local ammo dealers. For the price and caliber size, I will give it 4 stars.

I just came back from the range after putting about a 100 rounds through my 3" blued Bulldog .44 Special. More about that in a moment.

First, right out of the box I found a very handsome, lightweight, and ergonomic (to my hand) revolver. As I checked it over for defects, (before taking possession down at my FFL,) I noted the cylinder release slide was somewhat stiff, and sticky. This resulted in the cylinder being difficult to open. The trigger felt a bit gritty, as did the hammer. At $389 this is not a precision made revolver, so I expected it to have a few short comings. Plus, I did not intend to spend twice that amount on a .44 Special revolver, so I knew exactly what to expect. (Another thing that attracted me to this pistol is that I also own a 19th Century British Bulldog which belonged to my grandfather, similar to what Gen. George Custer carried at Little Bighorn.)

The first thing I did was make a cosmetic change by removing the rather plain wood grips and replace them with some really nice looking secondary market grips. Just personal taste. At the range today I was pleasantly surprised with the little Bulldogs handling and accuracy. This gun is a pleasure to shoot, and I kept my hits within a pie plate at seven yards with rapid fire drills, and within three inch groups firing it with the hammer cocked. However, during some of the rapid fire drills I had the trigger stick, and refuse to return to battery. This was somewhat concerting, and I am convinced this gun will need a thorough cleaning, especially in the internals, to smooth it out. I will probably take off the grips and immerse it in a bucket of gun cleaning solvent to try and get all the grittiness out.

Carrying this pistol is a pleasure with it's light weight and .44 bore for personal defense. Buffalo Bore sells a wad cutter personal defense round for the Charter Arms Bulldog that is a step up in performance over the tame .44 Special cowboy action practice rounds. I have fired those Buffalo Bore rounds through this Bulldog and they performed well, with no significant increase in recoil, which is not really noticeable to me (I shoot alot of .45ACP for reference.)

If all the stickiness and grittiness disappears after a thorough cleaning, then this gun will become one of my favorite carry and truck guns. If not, I will have to pursue some professional armorer help to sort it out.

First, my compliments to Buds for once again super service. I signed up for Team Buds wondering if it was worth it and It was. They got this gun to me before Christmas which I thought would be next to impossible.

Now for the gun. A Charter Arms classic .44 Bulldog, I'm super impressed! The fit, finish, grips and trigger pull are all very good. I noticed in another review there was a complaint about finish in the sight track. It's apparent to me that this was deliberately left rough as to keep it from reflecting glare while sighting the gun. I had a early 1980s Bulldog which I thought at the time to be a great gun for it's intended purpose and the new one is at least as good if not better. My thanks to Buds again for over and above customer service.Best Regards John B.

Tooling marks from what appears to be worn equipment in the manufacturing process. The workmanship is not equal to another Charter Arms I own, but it isn't bad enough to give it 3 stars. It is highly polished and 95 percent of the gun is perfect. I lean toward Utilitarian over beauty anyway, not looking for safe queen.

Fair price and I think it is great they offer the Classic. Would I buy it again, yes. Came with the grips pictured which is what I wanted. Lock up is tight and action is smooth.
