Been after one of these for a long time. Absolute beautiful work of art. May never shoot it again after putting a box through to test function and accuracy.

I was a little hesitant to buy Uberti made products at first. After all, how could folks in Italy know how to craft fine vintage American firearms? Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I purchased a couple revolvers. One I had to send back because of some assembly flaws but that happens with American made stuff too.
Fast forward to my third Uberti/Cimarron product, this 1873 Saddle Shorty and when the product arrived, it was a thing of beauty. At first, I was a little disappointed in the rough action. I felt for the money, it could have been a little smoother. Cocking with the smooth steel butt plate seemed to move the gun off my shoulder. However, after a couple days of simulated firing (without actually pulling the trigger) it seemed to smooth out a bit. I took it out shooting and it was smoother by then. I hardly noticed any roughness during actually firing. It could use a little tuning but not bad out of the box after some initial use.
Accuracy - I found the shots at 25 yards with 38 caliber cowboy loads of 158 lead projectiles to hit a couple inches high and right. However, shot grouping for 80 percent of the shots at normal standing firing speed was in a three inch group. I am sure I could have shot better if accuracy was my only concern. The sights are acceptable and everyone will have their own personal opinion.
Reliability - I only got to fire 50 rounds of reloaded 38 special through this 357 magnum rifle. It digested them with ease. There were no jams or hitches in levering.
Appearance - The rifle came in one of the plainest and flimsiest boxes you ever saw but they make the most of their packaging budget as the rifle was 99% flawless. One minor flaw on the butstock you can barely see is all I found. The checkering is good looking and functional. It helps grip the rifle while working the lever. The blueing on the barrel and magazine tube is much better than average. The receiver's case hardening looks good although I have seen better. The internal parts had some brass looking parts and they are free from machining Mark's best I can tell. The butt plate is very well polished but it doesn't give much grip until you get it broke in. The woodx is very nice, non-glossy. Overall, it is a stunning piece of Italian craftsmanship that invokes a great amount of American pride.
I give this gun a 9 out of 10 for a stock rifle.
