The Freeplay lantern harnesses the power of its user to generate
and store energy. The user turns the winding handle (for approximately
30 seconds) which energizes a special constant force spring. Power is
generated by the spring driving through an internal gear train.
The unit can be stored in the fully wound state indefinitely, ready
for immediate use. The lantern may be operated directly off the spring
on "NORM" setting.
The lantern is also equipped with a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery and
an intelligent AC/DC charge module. The lantern offers two brightness
settings "NORM" and "MAX" and a flash mode.
It is designed to operate on the "MAX" setting under battery power
only. Operation on the "MAX" setting requires a charged battery. This
is achieved by an AC/DC adapter or by successive spring discharges in-
to the battery.
When fully charged, shine time is up to 2 hours on the "NORM" set-
ting.
During a period of extended power failure (or remote use condi-
tions), the lantern can be charged repeatedly through the winding
handle. Power from successive winds will be converted if winding is
repeated periodically.
When not used for illumination the Freeplay lantern may be used as
a generator to supply power to most appliances using two AA batteries.
It's output capacity is limited to 3-volts and 650ma.
