  A typical loading 147gr bullet from a typical 9mm pistol will have a muzzle velocity slightly below the speed of sound, thus being “subsonic.” With a higher pressure load (such as +P) or a longer barrel, that same bullet might have a muzzle velocity above the speed of sound, thus being supersonic
