Since I'm closing-in on retirement, I wanted a high quality .22LR revolver so I can shoot more and save money on ammo. I researched everything out there and choosing the S&W 617 was a no-brainer. First of all, Bud's 90-Day Layaway works perfect for me. In NJ it takes a while to get purchase permits, so when I saw the 617 in stock I ordered it, put it on layaway and waited for the permits to go through. Once they did, I paid the balance and the revolver was at my FFL within 7 days. When I opened the box I was amazed at what a beautiful piece this is! Fit and finish are excellent. Lock-up is tight. Everything is lined-up perfectly. Nice balance. This is the ideal compliment to a 686. I wiped it down right there and gave it a little oil and took it into the range to get a feel for the gun. I loaded some CCI Mini-mags, sent the target out at 10 yards and wow! First shot was a dead-center bulls-eye! This gun shoots way better than I can--nice tight groupings for the rest of the session. Only change I'm going to make is a set of Altamont rosewood grips that I have on order. If you want a .22LR revolver that will last several lifetimes, make an investment in a 617 and you'll never be sorry!

The pistol arrived in a timely manner, no problem with Buds Gun Shop. However, as soon as I opened the box I noticed that the finish was sub standard. I accepted the pistol from FFL because I didn't have my reading glasses on and the lighting was dim so I thought I was just seeing things. As soon as I got it home in better lighting and with my glasses on the finish looked like someone carelessly took a fine grade piece of sandpaper and moved it in different directions without concern for uniformity etc. I contacted S&W and they sent me a return label so they could have a look at it. A gentleman by the name of Mark from S&W service called me and told me that he agreed with the observation that the finish was poorly done but, that is the new S&W standard. He sent it to a gunsmith to see if they could do anything for it and then it was returned to me with the same poor finish job. No improvement at all! I have never seen any firearm manufacturer sell and stand behind such a lousy finished product! It is a solid well built pistol and I'm guessing it will shoot fine but, DO NOT fall for the hype about S&W perfect fit and finish! For what you get it is way over priced! There are far superior products with far superior customer service both foreign and domestic available. This is my last S&W!

Great pistol, my wife who cannot handle too much recoil, loved this revolver. Now we both go to the range and shoot together. the long barrel makes it easy to shoot on target. I also love this gun and i like to shoot CCI stingers .

Revolver is absolutely wonderful. Should have bought one years ago, quality is worth the price. Accuracy and reliability are top notch. I'd heard reports of the 617 having issues with locking up due to getting dirty quickly. No issues with mine after several hundred rounds of varied ammo. Bud's was a little slow shipping this one but I'm willing to let it go due to the past excellent track record.

Besides being a plain old fun gun to shoot, it is an excellent "trainer", used to develop the basic skills of marksmanship. The revolver mimics the size, weight, and trigger of the larger caliber K frames. Although it is high priced, it's a fine firearm. The only negative is the all black sights, but that can be remedied with a dab of nail polish.

I had wanted this revolver for a long time and finally saw it listed and jumped on it. It's big, it's heavy and it's beautiful ! I gave it an initial look over and cleaning, it was in perfect condition from the factory and fit and finish was immaculate. It is so cool to open the cylinder and see the 10 round capacity. Trigger pull is nice and crisp and light in single action and double action is smooth and breaks clean, a very nice trigger all around. Accuracy seems very good, I was bouncing a can and hitting a gong pretty easily at 25 yards and was very pleased. Today I will set up paper targets and check it and adjust it if necessary. I have looked for a great 22 and tried many, but this one is the one I will stay with, I think that for what it is it is the best to be had. With all the horror stories about S&W quality and quality control these days, I was either very lucky or the stories aren't as bad as they are said to be. I could not be more pleased with my purchase of this AMERICAN handgun.
