He gun is a very nice .22 revolver, typical of Smith and Wessons quality when compared to their 686 full-sized gun. Trigger is nice both in single and double action mode. Sights are great. This gun is amazingly accurate, even more so than my Ruger MKIII, which is a tack driver. I can put 10 rounds of bulk pak .22 through the same hole at 15 yards consistently off the bench with this 617. One caution I'll state is you must be vigilant about keeping unburnt powder from accumulating under the extractor star. The tolerances on the gun are such that a little powder under the star will cause binding during closing of the cylinder and cycling of the gun. In addition, be on the lookout for your ejector rod to possibly come unscrewed. A little blue locktite on the threads ahead of time will prevent a bad day. I highly recommend this gun. Great shooter !

THE SERVICE: This was my first experience purchasing a firearm on line, so there was some trepidation on doing so. After some time of researching Bud’s reviews on this site and elsewhere, I decided to give it a go. And, as advertised, it was a positive, painless experience: ordered this revolver late in the business day on Tuesday. The FFL notified me that it arrived on Friday. Due to being out of town then, arranged with the FFL to pick up the 617 on Sunday afternoon. A piece of cake …. thanks to Bud’s, and thanks to Jerry, my local FFL. THE GUN: Have been looking to purchase a new 4 inch S&W 617 for several months, but none was to be found locally. Had read of some “cleanliness issues” on recently produced Smiths, however, there was nothing major with this one. As received, this 617’s barrel and frame had a somewhat duller finish than the cylinder, but a light application of Mother’s Mag & Aluminum Polish quickly resolved this. Cylinder face had no carbon deposits around charge holes. Bore and charge holes were free of residue. Put 100 rounds of CCI “mini mag” thru it today at the range with no FTF. Really enjoy shooting this revolver!

Excellant S&W 22 Revolver in SS. Received in about 3 weeks. The web site is good about updatijng the order progress. I've shot about 50 rounds through the revolver and the action is smooth and almost like a watch in quality. Exactly like other Smith revolvers I have owned. I would definately recommend this model over the cheaper revolvers due to the S&W quality and reputation. Summary: more costly but well worth it.

Best 22 revolver on the market but came from the factory with a stiff trigger and the timing was a little off on 2 of the 10 cylinders. The guns also came with new grips that are not the Houge deep finger groove rubber grips that were pictured on the website(that is slacking on Bud's part). Also, gun's finish was not that well-polished and almost looked a little used. Once the trigger was smoothed out the gun was a joy but overall I think it should be better quality for $700...but when compared to a Ruger sp101 in 22 its night and day on both accuracy and trigger pull (even out of the box pre trigger work). Grips were not that bad but I wanted the Houge ones more. All in all I ended up not keeping the gun but may get the 6" version or hold out for a good Dan Wesson pistol pack... I think they made them better back in the day.
