First I should say that I haven’t fired the gun yet. I bought the Maverick 88 to keep by the bed in case of emergency. It seems to be well built and cams plenty lubed out of the box. It looks well built for the $200 price tag and the $10 lifetime warranty was a no brained for me. I really like how many tactical accessories there are for this model at affordable prices. Every mod I’ve put on my 88 has gone on very easily. The pump action cycles smoothly as well. If money is less of an issue maybe focus with the Mossberg 500 Tactical, butif you’re on a tight budget like me the Maverick 88 Security is a solid choice. Also thanks to Buds for fast, free shipping.

I bought this Maverick as a dedicated home defense shotgun that I could load and leave under my bed as my "heavy artillery" at close range. As an old retired cop, I can run a 12 gauge pump gun in my sleep almost, and know what it can do at close range. I got this one because I wanted something with a reasonable track record for reliability, at a price that wouldn't break the bank. I know from experience that if the gun is ever actually used in a defensive shooting, it will most certainly be taken as evidence, and by the time I see it again, if ever, it might even be rusted shut. Therefore I wasn't going to put a lot of money into it. The one thing I did want was an extended magazine tube, but not because I wanted the gun to hold lots of shells necessarily. I learned a long time ago that the weakest link in the pump shotgun was the magazine tube spring. As an armorer, I used to replace them all the time in department shotguns that stayed fully loaded constantly. I learned a long time ago that a partially loaded magazine tube was best for shotguns that were not going to be used much. With this model, I can put five rounds of buckshot in the tube and still leave the spring not fully compressed. In addition, if I need another type of ammo, for example a slug, I can grab one off of the butt stock cuff and feed it into the mag tube, pump the action and I'm set, because there was empty space left in the magazine tube. For those reasons, I consider this model superior to the very similar 6 round version sold at about the same price here. But, if you think you might want to add a longer hunting barrel at some point, you will need to buy that one, because it can't be done on this model. This is a pretty good shotgun for the money, but you do have to put up with the safety being on the trigger guard on this model rather than the tang like on a Mossberg 500. You also get a plastic trigger group that can crack sometimes under heavy use, but few will use a shotgun of this type hard enough for that to be a concern. The only other thing I will mention is that the action on my gun came out of the box a bit stiff but is wearing in now. On the upside, my gun patterned especially well out to 25 yards with Federal Tactical Reduced Recoil 00 Buckshot, and was pretty accurate with Federal Law Enforcement 1 ounce slugs out to 50 yards, even using just the simple front bead sight. Overall, I don't think you can beat this for the money as a dedicated defense gun or even in a pinch to hunt with at closer ranges.

The gun functions perfectly and quick delivery by Bud’s to my FFL. Would absolutely do business with Bud’s again!

The Maverick 88 12 ga 20" security arrived well packaged and undamaged from Bud's in the expected time frame. It is well designed, (cross-bolt safety located in front of trigger guard) finished, and functions well. Don't be concerned about the polymer as it functions as well as my 500's and the cross-bolt safety is more desirable than the tang safeties. An excellent choice for home security as well as the pick-up and ATV. The affordable pricing makes it practical to buy one for home security, one for the pick-up, and one for the ATV.

I have owned this exact same shotgun once before, about 10 years ago. If anything, I think it has been slightly improved by use of a more forgiving recoil pad. Not much else seems to have changed. It's definitely an entry level, utilitarian 12 gauge. No frills, no bells or whistles, but it functions perfectly, is VERY accurate, and groups well, despite the 20" security length barrel. It's not quite as durable as a similar $400 Mossberg 500, which uses steel in place of some of the polymer on the Maverick 88. It's not as prestigiously carried by law enforcement as the Remington 870, and it doesn't have as slick and fast an action as the Winchester Defender, but if you want a reliable, fun, and inexpensive way to lay down serious 12 gauge firepower, NEVER overlook the Maverick 88 as an excellent option, because this gun will do everything the others will, without breaking the bank!

It%u2019s cheap and it works. Handles all loading from light target to some nasty slugs. There are no recoil reducing properties to this firearm whatsoever so be aware that even light loads may leave a mark as opposed to a trap gun etc.
