The gun looks nice, shoots good but the barrel lock doesn't work correctly. When the hammer is cocked the barrel release can still be operated and it doesn't seem to lock in as well as my H&R 12ga or my H&R 30-30. I had hoped it was just because it was new and stiff. I cleaned the gun , lubed it and shot 25 rounds thru it and it's no better. I do hope the company stands behind this and fixes it quickly .

This is a great rifle! I paid just under 250$ for an AMERICAN MADE 45-70 Gov't with a near perfect hardwood stock finished in a very nice walnut stain, the blueing on the gun is outstanding. I really was not expecting the gun to be this nice. Here is the really good part after cleaning the rifle I took it to the range and shot 10 rounds ( Hornady 45-70 325gr FTX) at 150 yards with the iron sights all with in 3.5 inches of bullseye. The rifle is definitely more capable than I am. Buds was just like 99% of the reviews say outstanding. I don't think you can go wrong for this much rifle for this price AWESOME!!!!

This weapon is a great buy. The finish is great and it's surprisingly light for a weapon of this caliber. Took it to the range today and it was fun to shoot. It's accurate and the recoil isn't bad, but it's not an all day shooter. Starts to make the shoulder a little sore. It's very handy and I'd highly recommend it.

My ratings are relative. Is this among the greatest guns ever made? Of course not, but for an under $300 rifle for shooting .45-70 Gov't., I'm giving it five stars. What might you like? Mine was accurate out the box, pleasing look to the wood and metal, recoil feisty but in a good way, and a much cheaper way to five 45-70 than nearest options (when available). What might the perfectionist not like? Release lever a little loose, no automatic extraction, and vented recoil pad a little raw looking. But I still give this five stars. Manual extraction was easy, by the way. The day after picking it up from my FFL, I finished work a little early and carried it out to the farm with a handful of rounds just to check it out. After firing three, I was sorry I didn't bring the whole box. I am pleased enough to look at other Handi-Rifles in other calibers.
