Waited several years to write this review as I wanted to shoot several loads and try different optics before giving a review. This gun is not for a recoil shy individual, it does have a kick. I use a lead sled at the range. I have used factory Winchester 305 grain, Hornady 325 grain and Remington 405 grain loads and all provided suitable results. Several hand loads of the same weights also provided accurate results. Optics included several red dot sites and scopes. This gun is used primarily for black bear in cover so the gun is zeroed at 50 yards. Final hunting set up is Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain with a Vortex 1-6 Strike Eagle optic. The Vortex has handled the recoil and the illuminated red dot is nice at dawn/dusk. The Hornady 325 grain is accurate and I picked up five boxes at a price that made me put the reloading dies back on the shelf. As usual Buds was great on the transaction and shipping. Great shooter at a Buds Price 5 Stars

Gun is an Absolute beast. Loaded with hot hands loads this gun can take it but I couldn't. With solid glass it's a tack driver.

This gun is a great value. It has a very smooth light trigger that I was not expecting in a stock trigger. I bought this to use for deer season in Ohio which only allows straight cartridge calibers. It ended up being cheaper to buy a complete gun in 45-70 then to get an upper for my AR in 350 legend. Plus I now have a gun that can be used out west on larger game.

I never thought I'd purchase anything other than a black powder rifle in CVA brand. That being said, this is one accurate rifle! One of the best purchases! Also,Buds gun shop is the best!

Very nice firearm. Smooth and very little recoil for a 45/70. This is heavy, especially when mounting a scope!

I'm a big-bore fan who wants to use hard-cast lead bullets in my .45-70, but my Marlin 1895 has rifling unsuitable for HCL. Enter the CVA Scout.
Break-open, single shot, stainless steel, muzzle brake - all were desirable characteristics and so I ordered one from Bud's. No iron sights but an integral scope base, which was fine since I plan to use this rifle for long-range shooting of 300-600 yards.
Upon receipt and examination, I was impressed. A fine-looking rifle, very tight and no slack whatsoever in the action. Not certain of the ammo it will endure yet, but it is probably close to what a Ruger #1 and #3 can digest. I had on hand 90 rounds of 500gr handloads that had been intended for the 1895. Slapped a suitable scope on it, using high rings, and I was in business. Recoil was not bad at all, using 500gr bullets at circa 1200fps MV. Seems quite accurate too, and I soon had them on the paper and in the center ring at 50 yards. And here my troubles began.
After the first 20 rounds, I noticed that my groups were opening, not tightening. Scope adjustments did no good - but it was then that I noticed that the entire scope assembly was moving - the factory base had shot loose! I removed the scope and found that I did not have the proper size Allen wrench to tighten them. Thus ended my shooting day early.
Writing CVS, I was told that all was as it should be and that I would have to remove the base and reinstall using Loc-tite on the cap screws. There are also only 4 cap screws holding the base down, although there are 6 holes in the base. Only 4 holes are drilled and tapped for mounting on the rifle and I am told that is as it should be. With full-power 500gr loads, at circa 1700fps (or 400gr loads at 2000fps), recoil will be substantial and I an concerned that a mere 4 cap screws, even with Loc-tite, will not endure such service. Time will tell, beginning next week.
I like the rifle thus far, as far as its function and appearance are concerned, but I really feel that CVA should have done a better job in securing the scope mounting base on such a heavy caliber, and that provisions should have been made for use of 6 cap screws instead of just 4. Drilling and tapping 2 additional holes can't be a budget-buster, and I'll have it done myself if need be.

I’m extremely impressed with the trigger and the accuracy of this gun it for a sub 400 dollar gun it’s extremely accurate, I have it sighted in at 100 and it will shot a three shot group and all three holes touching. I do recommend getting a good recoil pad to help soften it. Also I was glad to see it does come with both a muzzle break ( already installed) or you can switch it out for a thread protector ( included with the gun).

This is just one of many purchases from Bud's. As usual Bud's made this a very easy transaction. Shipping was very fast. The firearm is exactly what I was looking for in a hunting rifle. I have a Sharps 45-70 and really enjoy this caliber. The Sharps is a bit heavy to be lugging through the woods (plus the 34 inch barrel makes it a challenge as well) The CVA Scout rifle is just the solution. It's light weight design makes it much easier to carry in the woods. It is a very accurate rifle. If you like single shot rifles, this is one for you.

Very comfortable to shoot, not as much recoil as one would expect from such a large round. Tack driver with the right ammo. Mine loves Winchester ballistic silver tips.

This rifle is not for the faint of heart. It is very loud and will knock your fillings out with higher hand loads. This rifle will be my go to in the fall, and anticipate it to be a vicious one shot killer. The rifle is not even close to the advertised weight. It was over 8 lbs out of the box, and just over 10 lbs with scope, sling, and leather stock bullet carrier. The extra weight really sucked up the recoil. Was pleasantly surprised to find out the fore stock pops right off, and rifles breaks in half almost instantly. Trigger was tested on scale, and consistently broke crisply at 2.7 lbs. Trigger is outstanding. I suspect the large muzzle break is the cause of excessive report, or maybe it's just that the .45-70 is a monster. Anyway, the muzzle break is 2 3/8 inches in length, threaded (metric), and screws right off. The stainless steal finish is not shiny at all, but flat grey. The rifle appears to be indestructible. Now for the not so good. This may be nit picking, but it needs to be mentioned. The rear stock sling swivel hole seems to be slightly over sized. It works fine, but suspect it's probably designed for European (metric) sling adapters. The problem was that the comb drop was to much for me. I made a lace on leather stock bullet carrier, that is able to adjust your cheek drop. Added several leather shims and raised the drop 5/8 of an inch up. Perfect for me. Like i said, these two issues are not really a problem at all. Now for the really really good. Prior to shooting, i removed the scope mount, cleaned with alcohol, and re-mounted with lock tight. Chose Nikon slug hunter for extended eye relief and ballistic plex capability. Got it on paper quickly at 100 yards with 350 grn Hornady round nose new brass hand loads. Have worked loads with IMR 4198 down to 1 1/4 inch at 100, but still in development phase. Just neck sized sized a group of fired brass with 38 grains of IMR 4198, but haven't shot yet. Should be under 1 inch at 100 yards. Will let you know. Since 90% of all deer shot by me were 75 yards and under, this is another non issue. Rifle groups much better than I expected a break action single shot to perform. Overall, I consider this rifle to be outstanding. The best rifle for the money i have ever purchased. Would give it a 6 out of 5 if i could.
