Mossberg Patriot in .338 Winchester Magnum...for $300 bucks. Amazing.
In this day and age where everything has to be "tacti-cool" to be popular - including caliber, finding an outrageous "steal" on a good bolt gun is easy. Seems the tacti-cool crowd only knows about two calibers, and prefer them chambered in overpriced auto-loaders, or "tactical" rifles that differ from this one ONLY in superficial accoutrements.
Even so, a .338 Winchester Magnum...pushing over 4,000 lb-ft of energy with the ability to strike much farther than any .308 with more power, is a useful addition to any "prepper" collection. The Mossberg makes it an affordable choice with a lot more tacti-cool features than one might think.
First it comes with a simple, straight comb polymer stock built to handle any weather or usage condition. The rifle uses a detachable box mag - for a lot less green than Ruger's tacti-cool versions. The Patriot has a modern receiver with built in weaver scope mounts and a nice, fluted bolt with recessed lever and knurled knob. The trigger is adjustable from 2-7 pounds and is glass-rod crisp with nifty safety lever. The Patriot synthetic is a good, basic, full-featured rifle that can hit as accurately as you can with a delivery that gets the job done on any living creature in North America!
The rifle has a really nice feel. It's light, comes to the shoulder quickly without snagging, and the bolt is smooth with a solid lock-up when chambering a live round. With a warm-up shot, it will put three more inside 3" at 200 yards using a rest and 6-24x50 Mil-dot target scope using factory ammo. IF and when I get around to reloading for it, I'm sure it will be a sub-MOA shooter.
