In 1871, Colt employee Charles Richards was awarded a patent for converting Colt percussion models to breech loading cartridge revolvers. The Richards cartridge conversion was an instant success. On July 2, 1872, William Mason, another Colt employee, was awarded a patent for an improvement to the Richards model. Conversion models remained popular with cowboys (many originals will be found with imprints of fence staples on the butt) even after the introduction of the 1873 Colt®. This was due to the low cost of conversion models.

My Cimarron Richards-Mason .38 special 7-1/2 “ looks and feels like a real Colt. It shoots as accurate as my 3rd generation Colt .45 Single Action Army. I am extremely satisfied. The trigger action is as crisp as my Colt Python’s . It’s hard to believe the value put into this reproduction. For my preference, the sharp edges are going to be stoned smooth( de-horned) to make for more comfortable handling. This is my first Cimarron reproduction , but most likely not my last . My first time dealing with Buds and it too will not be my last.

Wow! What an awesome gun to look at as well as shoot! This gun is an absolute blast to shoot! Turns a lot of heads at the range!

This 1851 Richards-Mason arrived with a lot more oil than usual, but after a good wiping, it was as expected from Uberti-Cimarron. Fit and finish from the grips to color case hardened frame to the blued barrel is perfect. The cylinder timing and trigger pull is spot on and shoots great. A welcome addition to my collection.

Every time I fire the gun, the cylinder hangs up and I have to readjust wedge every time which is a pain for a $500 gun.

Most accurate, smoothest shooting, natural pointing straight out of the box firearm I’ve ever purchased.

Once again Buds did an outstanding job with purchase. They always seem to have an amazing selection in inventory with reasonable pricing. This particular gun - my fourth purchase from Buds - a Cimarron 1851 Richards-Mason Conversion is absolutely perfect in fit and finish. The ejection rod and hammer notch sight are a little odd but I believe they are true to the history of this gun. Happily, the gun shoots to point-of-aim at 10 yards which is good as I don't know how I would adjust the notched hammer sight. The lock up is tight, a very slick action and a light trigger. A flawless 1851 R-M replica.

This is actually a pretty sweet shooting revolver. Good balance, good weight, and accurate. BUT. There are some glaring faults. 1). The cylinder does not line up with the ejecting rod at a full "click". To eject a spent cartrige, you have to line it up perfectly by hand. Irritating. I mean, come on, just design it so you can eject the shell casings while the cylinder is seated on the block. 2). Over rotation of the cylinder. Yes, you heard me right folks. If you pull back the hammer quickly, the cylinder will skip past where it is supposed to come to rest. The result? MISFIRES. Evidently, the manufacturer skips on a quality block pin or "seear" in the trigger assembly, and, as a result, after a few hundred cycles, this pin looses strength, and slows down the "block". Not good, not good.

I just received this yesterday - shipping was a bit slower than previous purchases, but no real complaints. Beautiful looking revolver. Shoots well. It seemed a bit more delicate than my Uberti Cattleman, but that could be due to the design differences (open frame vs closed frame, pre-war vs post-war)... Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase - price was great too.

Love this western style revolver. These are getting very hard to find i looked for about 6 months and could never get one in 38 special. The wood and case coloring on this revolver are outstanding, very nice quality this model has the 7 1/2in octagon barrel and it shoots nice too. Better pick one of these up before its too late. i looked all over and buds was the only people carrying this gun.
