The RIA MAPP MS is the embodiment of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. It's basically a clone/copy of the polymer line of CZ 75 pistols with some cosmetic differences. Even more close in appearance, structure and function is the Tanfoglio and EAA versions. This speaks to a highly successful design. The polymer frame is however a distinct improvement from a functional point of view. The grip is smaller around, reach to the trigger is shorter, and the pistol is a good 10 ounces lighter than its steel-framed parentage. It retains the reverse slide rail system of the original design, though it does incorporate enhanced ergonomic changes. The slide has a rounded profile down most of its length, flaring into traditional serrations at the rear that make raking the slide much more positive than on an original CZ. Finish is as expected - a muted, dark black-blue that is even all over. The polymer frame appears sturdy with thick sidewalls and the fire control parts located in a removable, steel cage, or sub-frame very much like the parent CZ design. This design seems daunting to disassemble until the process is understood and suddenly stripping down a CZ - and by extension this MAPP becomes easy and almost fun! The trigger seems to have been designed from the outset with a shorter pull, and lighter too. Part of the light-feeling pull is likely related to the smaller diameter grip that gives even modest size hands a better grip. The human hand fits the MAPP perfectly - better than a 1911 dare I say it!
The method of operation is one I tend to prefer over the SAO 1911 design, or the more modern striker designs to include Glock. The MAPP is double-action/single-action with a very well positioned thumb safety that allows cocked and locked carry with an outstanding, trigger back, single-action starting point. So this gives the kind of carry mode many prefer, plus the advantage of second-strike capability. The MAPP thumb safety location is more in line with how human hands work, with the lever further forward than a typical 1911, and function is positive with audible snicks between positions. Just like its parent design, the MAPP field strips by pushing out the slide stop, combined with holding the slide back about half and inch to align take down dots, after which the entire upper unit strips off the frame, and the non-captive spring and guide rod can be removed, followed by the barrel. It's worth noting that this budget priced pistol comes with a steel guide rod, something many much more expensive pistols do not - and the CZ 75B 9mm doesn't use a guide rod.
The magazine for this pistol is California legal in that standard capacity magazines are currently legal to own and use, but our ability to purchase them, or new firearms that use them is restricted - all awaiting the final court decision. Thus the MAPP MS came with the expected 10 round steel magazine which is very well made. CZ 75B magazines will also fit and feed perfectly, as will I'm sure, any marketed for Tanfoglio or EAA.
Though Californian's cannot buy a factory .22 TCM/9R, Armscor makes a conversion barrel for the MAPP FS and MS that makes this a far better value! While the .22 TCM and TCM9R were introduced and promoted as a fun range cartridge, the reality is the .22 TCM9R is the better street carry round. For me, the inexpensive 9mm ball round would be for practice, and the .22 TCM9R for practical carry.
Function has been solid without malfunctions of any kind using inexpensive 9mm FMJ ammo. Recoil is quite mild thanks to the pistol's ergonomics and weight. With the .22 TCM9R barrel and recoil spring installed, recoil is certainly present considering the cartridge delivers greater kinetic energy than the 9mm, but about half that of the 9mm, and experienced more as a sensation of the slide snapping back with little rise. The boom and blast of the .22 TCM9R combined with near-instant target reaction is a serious smile producer! Accuracy is good - as expected from a modern auto pistol, more than adequate to keep a soda can jumping 20 yards out!
For anyone who wants to engineering of a CZ in a quality built, polymer frame pistol costing half as much, but incorporating more evolved ergonomics, the RIA MAPP MS is a must buy!

I purchased the RIA MAPP several months ago, and wanted to write a review now that I've put about 2,500 rounds through it. This is my third RIA pistol, and like the previous two, I found the quality of this pistol to be outstanding. I own two other 9MM handguns, and this has quickly become my EDC. I like the weight, footprint (for lack of a better term) and the way it fits my hand. The white dot sights provide a good sight picture, and it has a very natural point of aim. I will probably eventually either replace the sites or enhance them with Night-Sights or Tritium. I would certainly recommend this pistol, and of course, doing business with Bud's is always fast and easy.
