To
fill increased demand by the civilian market for pocket pistols, Colt
designed scaled down versions of its popular 1851 Navy and 1860 Army
revolvers. The 1862 New Model Pocket Revolver, or Pocket Navy, was
chambered in .36-caliber and retained the Navy\'s octagon barrel and
conventional loading lever. The 1862 New Model Police, also chambered in
.36-caliber, was a miniature 1860 Army with a slightly modified fluted
cylinder. As Colt\'s last open-topped percussion revolvers, many were
converted to fire cartridges and manufactured by Colt as cartridge
revolvers through the 1870s.
