Savage Model 110 Overview

The Savage Model 110 is a repeating bolt-action rifle that, depending on the caliber, is capable of extinguishing life at quite some distance. I first time I owned one of these rifles, was 35 years ago…….back when Moby Dick was a minnow. I bought it at a department store chain, that has since gone out of business, for the bargain price of $159.00. To be quite honest, I bought it for a “loaner”, because I didn’t want to lend any of my “good guns” out. The gun wasn’t pretty to look at, but the ergonomics of the rifle were absolutely designed for the task at hand. It was not necessary to deal with an aftermarket stock, in fact, not that many were available back then and what it came with did just fine. I did scope the rifle with a relatively inexpensive Bushnell. The truth about this rifle came when it was time to sight it in. The frigger proved to be very manageable, the safety located just where it ought to be, and I found that 30-06 printing groups that made some of my other “high end” guns, blush. I had a friend with me that day, who said that the recoil was too stiff. He said that if he wanted to get beaten like that, he’d go home and insult his mother-in-law in front of his wife. Frankly, I don’t care for “a gun that don’t kick……….and a dog that won’t sic.”



Since that day, I guess I’ve owned a dozen different variations of the Savage 110. I’ve never owned one that doesn’t function, or won’t group. Sure, as a kid I was a fan of some of the older offerings of the Savage/Stevens line, but I had mistakenly been told that the “new Savage” was a hunting misfit and a mistake to buy. Now in these past 35 years, Savage has brought a lot of options, renovations, and yes invention to the rifle world, but on a quiet afternoon, if I sit real still, in my mind I still see me at 20 years of age, bagging a nice “10-pointer” with the best rifle that I ever owned for the money……...the Savage 110. (I think back then it was a 110E that I owned)



In the world of long guns, there’s plenty of “renegades”......but there’s only one Savage!
