As anyone who has a CMMG "conversion" unit, but wishes to build up a "dedicated" upper knows, you need one of these little gadgets to make your existing bolt work with a conversion .22LR barrel.
This unit is stainless steel, and matches the current CMMG bolts. It installs on the existing bolt easily, with no tools. Caution to not bend the guide arms on the bolt should be taken. Just go easy with it and it slips right on with no fuss at all. The unit will index itself on a CMMG barrel. The barrel's chamber end has a groove in the extension, and this collar has a little ball detent that fits right into that groove, snapping into place. It snaps out easily for cleaning or bolt removal. The hole in the top of the collar is to install/service the ball detent, should that need doing.
And, it works. The collar provides a good feed ramp for all the .22's I tried. Plain lead, hollow point lead and copper washed, and plain copper washed. Shot Stingers and plain-jane ammo. It all just "worked" with no drama.
Of interest to some shooters, I added the insert and sliding actuator to convert to S&W .22 magazines. When doing this, the magazine hold open device on the AR-15 will work as it does with 5.56/.223. Better working than with the CMMG system. The collar was totally functional with those non-CMMG accessories. Also functions with the CMMG (or other) "filled" charging handle.
All in all, the switch to a dedicated .22 upper was good (you be the judge for whether its worth the expense). Groups shrank from "just able to hit a #2 washtub at 50 yards, to keeping all the shots easily on a small paper plate. I could pick off a soda can at 50 yards most of the time (sitting, but not with a rest). The collar makes it all work.
