Bought the shield plus as my very first handgun. Here are some key details I think any new firearm owner should know about this gun: • The finish is really nice and durable, however it is pretty slippery and the slide serrations aren't that aggressive to get a good hold on when racking the gun. I had a little trouble when I first started handling the gun to rack the slide, however this issue quickly went away for me in a couple days. My girlfriend can't rack the slide at all. • The handle texture is so aggressive I actually used it to sand a piece of wood just to see if it could. This is subjective, some people like it, some don't. Having the handle rub on you when conceal carrying does not feel good at all. I had to lightly sand my handle to make it bearable. • The magazines that came with my gun, especially the 13 round mag, have problems holding the whole 13 rounds. I could only fit up to 11 with some serious effort. I looked into this issue and found many others with the same problem. The only result I found to work was to take my mag apart and sand down the orange feeder, which was preventing the spring from being fully seated and accepting all 13 rounds. I really don't recommend doing this, but it is worth mentioning for anyone else who buys this gun and experiences this problem. • The takedown lever is so incredibly stiff I have to put some serious force to move it downward. This is something that will probably get better over time, but is worth mentioning. • I got the model with a manual safety. This safety is horrible. Many people don't prefer a safety anyway, which is fine, but this being my first gun I wanted to have one just in case even if I decide to just leave it off. The corner of the safety, which is the only thing exposed for your thumb to fall onto when deactivating it, was extremely sharp and painful to press on. I had to sand this corner down too. It also requires a ton of force compared to other firearms to engage/disengage. This is something that will likely improve over time. However compared to other handgun safeties, like my FNX 45 or a 1911, this safety is pretty bad. I strongly recommend this gun to first time gun owners and gun enthusiasts alike. The above is stuff I think people should be aware of.

After putting several hundred rounds through it, I can confidently say it’s a solid, reliable handgun that works well for both self-defense and range use. I’ve shot a mix of FMJ and hollow points, and it’s flawless—no malfunctions at all. It’s also accurate right out of the box. Out of the box, the mag release felt a little stiff, but it’s breaking in with use.

I have carried my Smith& Wesson M&P Shield Plus 13+1 for the last several years and I love it! It's a good shooting gun. Easy on the pocket when purchasing ammo to practice with. Good to conceal and carry.

It's a very comfortable shooter, and breakdown / cleanup (I'm a stickler for clean guns) is nice & easy. It shoots accurately, but I'm still learning to get the best out of it. Being new to shooting, I now finally understand what people mean by trigger reset. I'd been fully releasing the trigger rather than just easing up enough to reset, which didn't do *my* accuracy with it any good. One thing I wish, though, is that another 10 round mag had been swapped in for the 13 round mag that's not legal here in CT where I live. Also, I'm going to be going for a different holster, as the one I picked, while clean on the draw, isn't really designed for reholstering smoothly.
