The Ruger Blackhawk (Carryhawk) has a good feel. This is the first single-shot revolver with a bird's head grip that I've owned. The gun's weight (43 oz) helps keep the recoil in check. The trigger pull (3 1/2 pounds) had a good break, with a small amount of over travel. The front sight, (Big Dot from XS Sights Systems) is impossible to ignore! It would be great for close, fast work. I will have to work more to get the hang of precision shots. The adjustable rear sight is important for the variety of loads that can be used.
The barrel length is NOT a really special 4 inches, as stated in the TALO webpage flyer, and in Bud's ad. The barrel is 4 5/8 inches, a standard length for Ruger Blackhawks. This minor, nit-picking detail does not change the good value of this handgun. Actually, a standard length means off-the-shelf holsters will work.

I haven't owned a single action in many years. I was easily persuaded to sell or trade every one I ever owned. Maybe because all the previous ones were .44 magnum. However, THIS ONE has found a permanent home with me. I had been almost terminal with the "magnum bug" all those years ago, and maybe if I had shot some .44 special, I might still have my old Super Blackhawk collection (including some Mag-Na-Port customs). Anyway, shooting .45 acp out of this gun is a hoot. The action is great. It is much better than any Ruger single action I have handled recently. It feels almost custom. I love the big dot sights, which make close-up shooting easy... and, did I mention FUN? I find myself firing it one-handed most of the time.
The .45 long colt cylinder is on hand if I want more horsepower. Many levels of performance are available with .45 long colt ammo, including plenty of .44 magnum level choices. I am also surprised how well the bird's head grips handle recoil. I have a medium sized hand and they fit very well. I can't recommend it enough.

Before I even got the gun to the range to shoot for the first time, the white insert in the front sight fell out, and being so small, I could not find it. And without the white dot you can't reasonably aim the gun. I contacted Ruger and they said that they would send me a new sight blade in a few weeks, which means I will have to work on the gun before it can even be shot the first time,

I just received this gun at my local LGS yesterday. First impressions: Cool, businesslike looking firearm. Love the birds-head grip and the option of firing 45 ACP or 45 Colt. I plan on firing it tomorrow. So far my only complaints are: Trigger pull-terrible you wonder if it's going to ever go off. I did the "poor man's trigger job" by taking one side of the trigger return spring off of it's stud. Still not tolerable. A spring kit is in order. Cartridge length: Loads with lead bullets that function fine in my 1911 style pistols will not seat properly in the 45 ACP cylinder. Not a big deal, I just seated the 200 grain bullets a bit deeper after measuring the overall bullet length. My main gripe: Mine did not come with the "V": notch rear sight. Instead it has a standard patridge-type rear sight. The front blade is so wide you cannot see any daylight around the sides of the front sight. I'll see how this affects shooting tomorrow. These are things that can be fixed with a good replacement spring kit and perhaps filing the rear sight or getting the correct one from Ruger. I do love the looks and feel of it. Time will tell what I have to do to make it my own.
