  John, yes this is legal as the barrel is not threaded and the device on the end is a Harmonic Dampener held in place by four Allen-head screws. A series of helical grooves on the barrel's surface allow the position of the harmonic dampener to be changed by turning it after loosening the attachment screws. Rotating the harmonic dampener clockwise moves it toward the receiver, while turning it counterclockwise shifts it toward the muzzle.
• Q: I ended up buying this rifle. What ammo do you recommend using in this, shooting in an indoor range. 50 yards. And they allow steel.

• Q: With a good scope on this rifle and its harmonic, how far can it shoot with somewhat accuracy? hitting within a 1 foot grouping?

  A:

  Get a good prism type optic like the Burris AR 332 with the Ballistic CQ reticle and you should be good to 600 yards. This is what I shoot 3-gun with but on an AR platform. Same ballistics. the .223 or 5.56 launches the 55 grain FMJ at 3150 fps. The guys who flunked Physics think the 5.56 is a superior round. LOL

• Q: What is that muzzle device? How is it attached? Standard threads?

  Tim, Ruger lists this muzzle device as a Adjustable harmonic dampener. Ruger does not post a lot of info on it so I would ask Ruger Customer Service directly at Telephone: 336-949-5200 / (Monday through Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm ET)

  They take a proprietary ring and seem to be scarce. You can find them on ebay. Product # 4101. I'd stick with the Ruger rings.

• Q: Hi there, I've seen different versions of the Mini 14 in CA gun shops, but I just want to make sure this one is CA legal as well. I would appreciate if you could shed some light on the matter.

  Yes, the Ranch models of the Mini-14 rifles are legal in Cali. The Tactical models are not. Here's the specifics...
  "As long as you choose a Mini-14 with no flash suppressor / flash hider (but a muzzle break is legal in Calif.) and as long as it has mags that are 10RD or less, it is legal in California."
