Quality! Paired with Hornady 20gr Vmax this rifle shoots some sized groups at 100 yards. Perfect for fox and coyote. I mounted a Leupold 4-12x40 scope in the supplied rings and it's perfect! Ruger Makes some nice rifles!

Ruger produces the best rifle platform for the 17 Hornet. That being said ... they still fall short of doing it right. The barrel is heavy ... but it is no target/varmint "bull" barrel as they would lead you to believe. I call it a "sporter" barrel with a pronounced tapering to the muzzle. And the barrel is not free-floated. It is heavy ... but only because of the 24" length. The stock ... for a target/varmint rifle ... is a joke. It looks spectacular ... I really like the laminated wood. But it is very thin at the pistol grip area, and then from the receiver to the for-end it gradually thins out. A target/varmint stock should be beefy ... especially at the for-end. How could Ruger fail at this attempt when they have already produced the near-perfect 10/22T. Why not just take that concept ... a real bull barrel and beefy laminated stock ... and incorporate it for the 77/17? A good thing about the rifle is that the bolt works as smooth as butter. Very nice! And the bolt handle clears the mounted scope. I did have to purchase my own set of 30mm Ruger rings because the rifle ships with 1" rings. Again ... I am only complaining because Ruger could have done so much better ... especially considering the price. But ... I will take the 77/17VHZ over anything else out there for the 17 Hornet. So if you are looking for a 17 Hornet rifle I would recommend this product. I will be keeping it and shooting it a lot ... even with its shortcomings.
